ABOUT US
Who We Are...
The Center for Nanoscale Materials was formally created on
January 2003, thanks to a $6M Grant for five years
from the NASA-URC program. The Center includes
ten professors from the Chemistry and Physics
Departments. The research topics of the Center
are: Nanoscale Dielectrics for Super Capacitors,
Nanostructured Materials for Flat Panel Displays
and Nanoscale Materials for Regenerative Power
Systems.
Through the CNM, graduate and Undergraduate students are being
trained in Nanotechnology concepts, tolls and
trends. Moreover, students and teachers from local
high schools are introduced to the topic throughout
workshops and research. The Center has a Nanoscopy
Facilty for the visualization of nanoscale materials
using high resolution electron microscopes. This
Facility is the first of its kind in Puerto Rico.
Also, the CNM collaborates with NASA Centers and
High Tech Companies.
Focus...
The focus of the CNM is on the synthesis, characterization
and applications of nanoscale materials that will
contribute to NASAs mission to science and
technology.
Objectives...
The objectives of the CNM are:
- Perform cutting-edge research in Nanotechnology,
focused around exploration mission-enabling
technologies.
- Create a Center for the exchange of ideas
with Nasa research centers in the field of nanoscale
materials for fuel cells, displays and high-density
energy storage devices
- To be the Puerto Rico nexus for drawing students
into nanotechnology areas relevant to NASA,
from graduate education to entering the scientific
workforce.
- To create the grounds for spin-off companies
that contribute to the National Space Exploration
